Honeyboy Edwards, June 28, 1915-Aug. 29, 2011
The last of the firsts, Honeyboy Edwards died this week. I got to see Honeyboy several times over the years (even interviewed him once) and it was always a privilege. My favorite time was an early Saturday morning at the farmers’ market in Bloomington, Ind., (maybe 1998). Honeyboy had played a gig in town that week, and somehow ended up on stage at the market. Bloomington has a big Tibetan population, as the Dalai Lama has family there, and there is a Buddhist monastery. Among the fresh produce and happy children were a handful of Tibetan monks, smiling and applauding for the Delta blues legend. (Snapshot of Honeyboy taken by Tina at the 2007 Juke Joint fest in Clarksdale, Miss.)
